From August to October, humpback whales travel along Moorea’s west coast, just beyond our beach. Here is when to come, how the boat trips work and what you really see, from a family that lives facing this lagoon all year.

When can you see whales in Moorea?
Humpback whales come up from cold southern waters to calve and mate in warm Polynesian seas. Around Moorea the season runs from August to October, with stragglers sometimes into November. Some years start earlier, some finish later: nature decides.
In the heart of the season, in September, encounters are most frequent: mothers with their calves, singing males, and sometimes breaches you can hear from the beach.
From the beach, a kayak or a boat?
On some season days you can spot blows and breaches from the sand at Haapiti, beyond the reef. It is never guaranteed, but it happens often enough that people keep one eye on the horizon over coffee.
By kayak you stay inside the lagoon: that is the territory of the sunrise dolphins, the rays and the turtles. To approach the whales you have to cross the reef, and that is done by boat, with a professional.
How a whale trip works
Trips usually leave in the morning, in small groups, for a half day. The boat runs along the barrier reef looking for blows, then approaches slowly, engine low, keeping the required distances.
Depending on conditions and the rules in force, a guided water entry is sometimes possible, in small groups with a certified guide. No serious operator will promise you an encounter: the good ones promise a beautiful morning at sea, and the whales do the rest.

Several licensed operators work around Moorea, and some leave directly from Haapiti, minutes from the pension. In season the seats go fast: book your trip as soon as your dates are set, and keep a spare day in case the weather turns.

Respect for the animals, first
French Polynesia is a sanctuary for marine mammals: approaching whales is regulated, with rules on distance, speed and behaviour, and the regulations keep evolving to protect the animals better.
That is good news, not a constraint. Choose a licensed operator, follow your guide’s instructions and remember that we are the visitors here: the best encounters are the ones where the whale chooses to stay.
And the rest of the year?
Outside whale season the lagoon does not empty: dolphins can be met all year round, often at sunrise, and turtles and rays frequent the lagoon and the reef.
That is one of Haapiti’s great pleasures: taking a kayak out at first light, when the water is glass, and seeing what the morning offers.
