What is a family pension?
In French Polynesia, a pension de famille is a small place to stay run by its owners, who welcome you in person into their home. A few rooms or a few fare, breakfast made in the morning and hosts who know their island: that is the spirit, recognised and encouraged by Tahiti Tourisme.
On Moorea it is the most direct way to meet the island: your hosts tell you where to eat, which day to go out on the water and what is genuinely worth the detour. At our place, Kathy and Franck are here every day, a few steps from the fare, and welcome every guest in person.
Pension or hotel: the real difference
A resort offers you anonymity, room service and often overwater bungalows. A pension offers you the island itself: hosts who are there every day, addresses no guidebook lists and travellers you meet again at breakfast.
The real question is not the star rating: it is what you came for. If you want to live Moorea rather than watch it from a sun lounger, the pension wins almost every time, and you will have money left for the excursions.
The budget: compare what is included
Pension prices on Moorea vary a lot with the comfort level: a simple room in a family home, a bungalow with its own kitchen or a renovated fare right on the beach. In every case you stay far below the island’s resorts, often several times over.
Always compare what is included before you compare prices: breakfast for two, free kayaks or a shuttle genuinely change what a day costs. At our place, breakfast and kayaks are included for every guest, and so are the pool and the beach jacuzzi.
Which coast of Moorea to sleep on?
The north holds the two famous bays, Cook and ’Opunohu, and Ta’ahiamanu beach. The east, around Temae, is close to the airport and its long beach. The west, around Haapiti, is the sunset side: the lagoon facing the pass and a slower rhythm.
We are biased, of course (our pension is in Haapiti), but it is a bias we chose: the whole island is easy to reach from here, and in the evening the sun goes down into the lagoon in front of you.
Pension life, in practice
Expect simple, well-kept houses rather than a hotel lobby: your fare, your terrace and hosts you cross paths with in the garden. Breakfast happens at sunrise, often facing the sea, and the rest of the day is yours.
Two useful reflexes: mosquito repellent for the evenings, and some cash in Pacific francs (XPF) for the snacks and markets, since many small places do not take cards. In Haapiti, the grocery store is right across from the pension.
Booking a pension: directly, simply
Pensions live on the direct relationship: an email or a WhatsApp message, a real person answering, and often a better rate than through a platform taking its commission.
In the high season, May to October, the good addresses go early: book the pension first, then your ferry or inter-island flights. The Papeete-Moorea crossing takes about 30 minutes, and there are no crossings at night.
Our pension in Haapiti: Fare Oaoa
Fare Oaoa Haapiti is the main house and five freshly renovated fare set on the sand at PK 23.9 on the west coast: six units in all, sleeping up to 24, including Maison Magnolia with its four bedrooms for big families.
Breakfast and kayaks are included for everyone, the pool and the beach jacuzzi are open to all six units, and we are 20 minutes from the Vaiare ferry terminal, 30 from the airport. If this way of travelling sounds like you, our fare are here, and so are we.
